About

I am Abdullah Alshaffi, a PhD student in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder). Currently, I am working with Professor Maria Kazachenko on studying Coronal Mass Ejections.

Before joining CU Boulder, I was a master's student at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where I worked with Professor Robert Fisher on super-Chandrasekhar mass progenitors of Type Ia supernovae. You can check my work through this link.

Before coming to UMass Dartmouth, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Astronomy and Mathematics at King Abdulaziz University, where I worked with Professor Hassan Basurah on photometric studies.

Research

I am working under Professor Robert Fisher supervision on Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). SNe Ia are astrophysically important as cosmological distance indicators in cosmology and as sources of enriched isotopes for the interstellar medium. However, the mechanism of the SNe Ia explosion remains obscured. Therefore, we are trying to learn about the internal structure, composition, and detonation mechanisms of the progenitor white dwarfs (WDs) that give rise to SNe. My work mainly focuses on studying SNe Ia that result from rotating white dwarf merger progenitors with hot envelopes, using models as proposed by professor Shin’ichirou Yoshida at the University of Tokyo.

I work on hydrodynamical runs using the data provided by our collaborator Yoshida, using the adaptive mesh refinement code FLASH. I follow FLASH runs with nucleosynthesis and radiation transport. My research aims to compare the synthetic spectra of these rotating mergers against superluminous SNe Ia events, such as SNLS-03D3bb by Howell and colleagues in a well-known Nature paper.
